The water level in the Danube is so low that they are reducing the performance of another Paks block again.
The Duna River’s water level has dropped 121 centimeters, which has led MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Zrt. to reduce the performance of block 2 by 50% as of July 30, 2026. This is part of a process in which the performance of blocks 1 and 3 were previously reduced, with the latter being completely shut down. The power plant provides the water needed to cool the reactors from the Duna River, but the record-low water level threatens safe operation. Operational decisions are made based on measurements, with the safety and environmental regulations taken into account.

Due to the historically low water level in the Danube, reaching -121 centimeters, MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant reduced the performance of Block 2 by 50% as of July 30, 2026. This decision is part of a series: previously, the operation of Blocks 1 and 3 was also reduced, with Block 3 being completely shut down. The power plant obtains the water needed for cooling the reactors from the Danube, but the record-low water level endangers the safe operation of the water extraction pumps. Further operating decisions will be made based on current measurements, while ensuring safety and environmental regulations.
