Record green energy production in Hungary – but not due to environmental protection
Environmental tax revenues in the European Union show stable growth, but Hungary achieved over 12 percent increase in 2024, placing it among the leaders in the EU. However, this growth is not due to traditional green policies, but rather to the introduction of a new tax on income and the effects of the new waste management system, as well as a 2017 accounting anomaly.
Environmental tax revenues in the European Union are projected to follow a predictable, moderate growth path, while Hungary experienced more than a 12 percent increase in 2024, placing it among the leaders in the EU. However, the increase in domestic tax revenues was not primarily driven by traditional green policy incentives; instead, it was mainly due to increased income tax resulting from EU obligations, the statistical impact of the new waste management system, and an unexplained anomaly in 2017.
