Paksi Nuclear Power Plant: preparing for an unprecedented step, so the country will experience a period without nuclear energy.
Hungarian electricity supply is currently secure, thanks to European integration and import capabilities. However, the gradual shutdown of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant highlights the need to expand and diversify the power plant park, as well as to rethink the energy strategy. Extreme weather conditions and the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean gas market further complicate the situation, a situation that is also reinforced by past energy policy decisions.
Thanks to the close integration of Hungary’s electricity system and market with the European Union, domestic electricity supply is currently secure. However, the gradual shutdown of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, the country’s largest power plant, highlights the importance of expanding and diversifying Hungary’s power plant park, as well as the need for overall system development and a rethinking of the energy strategy. In addition, the effects of the Middle Eastern conflict on the gas market, along with extreme heat and drought, do not help to manage the situation, which is partly due to past incorrect energy policy decisions. Furthermore, extreme weather and gas market conditions can also create similar situations in the European system, as demonstrated by the example of French nuclear power plants.
